Present Day

I blinked my eyes open a few times trying to adjust my sight. Slowly I stretched my body, waking my limbs still tangled in blankets. Patting around the bed, eyes half-shut, an eerie feeling crept up my spine. When I’d started drifting off to sleep in Sai’s bed my phone and glasses were scattered somewhere near my thighs. Now they were nowhere to be found. Sliding up into a sitting position, my eyes shot open.

I bounced my browns around the room in search of them. Often I’d fall asleep glasses on, phone in hand. Saige would lay them safely near me. With a quick glance to the windowsill, my glasses were on my face. Still no phone. Strange but I said nothing. The tv was on the PS4 home screen as usual, but inactive. There was a stillness in the room that wasn’t there when I’d laid down. The music that had been playing from the speaker was way softer than before, barely audible over the hum of the fan oscillating through the room.

Saige sat at the edge of the bed elbows to knees, shoulders falling from the edge of his world. I wiped semi-dry drool from the side of my mouth and shook my head. Damn I was sleep sleep. Probably snoring the house down.

He should have been sitting in the middle of the bed where he’d left his ass print. Should have been shouting through his headset at teammates that were good for nothing, and the online community of pre-pubescent boys hurling swear words out of context. Sai would have been jumping at the opportunity to play without my incessant need to be wrapped in his attention, but he wasn’t.

“Did you fuck him?” Saige’s shoulders caved, knees buckled from the pressure of having to speak the words out loud. I was still.

If he’s asking, that means he knows. Right? I could lie. Could fill his heart with sugar-coated truth, but I knew Saige. Knew he wouldn’t be asking if he didn’t know. His words were asking for the truth he felt so prepared to take. It was his heart. His heart was begging me to prove his eyes to be liars. I could hear it in the way his breath still hadn’t returned to normal. It was sharp, anxious. Everything except his words were practically begging me to fill him with any version of the truth that would rescue him from what he’d seen.

I stayed silent. Uncertain of what to say. Here I was waking up from a nap in his bed, adorned in only black lace panties and a white v-neck crop top. On some level I had been waiting for him to wake me up with his lips wrapped around my pearl pulling me from a dream, to send me out of space.  He turned to face me, my phone in his outstretched hand.
